American Cosplay in Akihabara?

When you think about Cosplay here in the United States, you may think of Americans going to their local con as Uchiha Sasuke, or to one of the biggest Anime/Cosplay events like the NY Anime Festival. But, when you think of Japanese Cosplay in Akihabara, your first thought usually isn’t about Americans. As I write this, there is a group known as Cosplish that is breaking traditional Japanese-only Cosplay norms. They are the advocates of broken English, and take a new approach on teaching English in Japan. Their group consists of people mainly from the United States and a few from Europe. Every Sunday you can find them in Akihabara or Ginza dressed up and handing out fliers. I doubt you will miss Cosplish even if you tried. Just look for the large crowd that you think may be trying to catch some shots of girls dressed in maid outfits, and you will be pleasantly surprised. It has been said that many Anime characters have western looking hair and features. Many people consider westerners cosplaying to look a little more authentic, but to me, that is debatable. Next time you are in Akihabara, look out for them, and say Hi.

  1. What’s interesting though is that I have read many Asians in particular think that Caucasians look truer to many of the anime titles. Anime characters have a tendency to not look typically Asian, and more western. But I do agree, Asian cosplay looks better to me.
