IMHO I thought Akira and Ghost in the Shell where the ones to bring Anime to the mainstream. I dont think someone making a cgi/live version of anime should be seen as bringing it into mainstream, otherwise we would be forgetting about the likes of Casshern (which I really liked). I dont think there is a problem with making it mainstream, there is a lot of demand for it, there's just not enough of it being released in the west ( not of the good stuff at least).

The Wachowski bros certainly put a lot of effort into making Speed Racer... the movie overall looked and felt like a cross between anime, a kaleidoscope, that Flintstones movie, a video game and the Dukes of Hazard

Haha I didn't see the movie but I don't think i'll run to the theaters to see it any time soon. You have better luck using Death Note or a Hayao Miyazaki movie to bring anime to mainstream.
