Speed Racer fails to take anime mainstream +

Speed Racer Movie PosterThe preliminary tracking isn’t looking good for Speed Racer. The movie opened on May 9th to less than impressive numbers. With Warner Bros counting on Speed Racer to be one of their summer blockbusters, I’m sure they are disappointed. It’s still a bit too early to tell if the $100 million dollar production cost will be made back by ticket sales.

As a fan of anime, it’s also a bit disappointing to see such a classic anime film to fail in the mainstream box office. I grew up watching old Speed Racer episodes, and I welcome every attempt at bringing anime to the mainstream. Do you plan on seeing Speed Racer? Hollywood Reporter via G4

Are you going to see Speed Racer?

  1. i dunno why I just don’t like the way this film looks and some of the actors in it. I might still check it out this weekend though

  2. I’m going with only one reason.

    I got a free ticket. :P

  3. Haha I didn’t see the movie but I don’t think i’ll run to the theaters to see it any time soon. You have better luck using Death Note or a Hayao Miyazaki movie to bring anime to mainstream.

  4. The Wachowski bros certainly put a lot of effort into making Speed Racer… the movie overall looked and felt like a cross between anime, a kaleidoscope, that Flintstones movie, a video game and the Dukes of Hazard

  5. i blame the guy playing speed racer. he look kinda old to play speed. they could have find a more suitable (handsome) guy to play him.

  6. IMHO I thought Akira and Ghost in the Shell where the ones to bring Anime to the mainstream. I dont think someone making a cgi/live version of anime should be seen as bringing it into mainstream, otherwise we would be forgetting about the likes of Casshern (which I really liked). I dont think there is a problem with making it mainstream, there is a lot of demand for it, there’s just not enough of it being released in the west ( not of the good stuff at least).
