KeyHoleTV: Watch Live Japanese TV Online! +
Have you ever wanted to know how to watch real-time, live Japanese TV for free? Maybe you’re trying to learn Japanese, but want to hear real Japanese, and not the type you just hear in Anime. Well there is a free program called KeyHoleTV that will let you do just that. KeyHoleTV is part of a project by Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs testing out P2P (peer to peer) technology. You can also stream your own live video using the same technology with a program called KeyHoleVideo. While the audio and video isn’t the highest quality, it is definitely watchable. KeyholeTV has a decent, but limited selection of channels. The bigger channels are TBS, TV Tokyo, TV Asahi, and Fuji TV. There area also a few smaller channels and user broadcasts that change randomly. If you’re interested in downloading it, here’s a step by step guide.
Side Note: The added a few new features with KeyholeTV version 3.04+. First if you double click the video window, it will open up another window so you can just have the video playing without the rest of the buttons. Also, if you click the button “TOP MOST ON” it will make it so the window stays on top of whatever you are doing!
1. Download KeyHoleTV
Head over to http://www.v2p.jp/video/Viewer/Windows and download the file labeled “SetupKHTV3.13.exe ” or you can just click here: Download KeyHoleTV.
Then head over to http://www.v2p.jp/video/Viewer/Windows/Update and download the file labeled “FixKHTV3.14.exe” (or click here)
Also available for Linux and Mac OSX.
2. Install KeyHoleTV
Select English, or which ever language you are most comfortable reading, and install the SetupKHTV3.13.exe file. Afterwards, run the update with the file FixKHTV3.14.exe.
3. Run KeyHoleTV
After the install, run the program and then you are going to be presented with the following screen:
In this screen, you will see various buttons, and the main channel guide. Below I will include a guide to the channels so you know what you’re looking at. A brief explanation of the buttons:
Logs you on and off of the server. Sometimes you will see errors saying that you are not connected to the server. Just click the button Off, and then back On to log back in.
Allows you to mute the sound. Trigger On and Off.
Allows you to stop and start the video.
The channel listings refreshes every now-and-then. Use this button to manually update the channel listings for KeyHoleTV.
After you have selected a channel in the channel listings window, click the Watch button to view the channel.
Right now, you don’t have to worry about this button as there are not many channels available on KeyHoleTV. However in the future, this button is going to be a must have.
I haven’t seen any broadcasters chatting, but I assume that KeyHoleTV has the option of allowing the viewers to chat with the broadcasters. There is a popular channel that features actress Risa Ishimoto, not sure if you can chat with her or not.
This tab allows you to view the video window.
This tabe allows you to view the channel listings.
4. Channel listings
This is the channel listings for KeyHoleTV. On this screen you will see the channel name, a preview picture of whats currently playing, and the amount of viewers watching that specific channel. When you see a high number of people watching, it usually means something good is on. Remember that here in the United States, we are about 14 hours behind JST (Japan Standard Time). So a lot of the popular shows and Anime will come on at odd times for us. Here is a listing of the current channels as of today. The channels are always changing. Match the beginning of the channel name with the English in red:

So there you go. If you are using this to help you with learning Japanese, I hope you get a lot out of KeyHoleTV. I will be updating this page when I see new channels, so bookmark the page or subscribe to my RSS Feed so you don’t miss anything. Below are a few TV Guide Japan type websites so if you know Japanese, or can figure out what the kanji means, you can have a better idea of what’s playing.

Wow, that’s awesome! I’ve been looking for something like this for a long time! The only thing I’ve been able to watch are news programs. Better than US News, for sure, but I wanted more variety. :D Thanks for the guide! ^_^

No problem. I was going to write this post a few weeks ago, but my KeyholeTV wasn’t connecting for some reason. I just thought it was a problem with the Keyhole server, so I put the article on the backburner. Turns out it was my firewall that was blocking it! I was so mad that I un-installed it. Glad you liked the article.

I appreciate the free tv viewer.
I find it works great!!
February 23rd, 2008 at 7:42 pm
I got Keyholetv a while ago, but I can’t view the Japanese characters on the program list, it just shows up as boxes, by any chance, do you know why that is?
Thanks
February 23rd, 2008 at 9:21 pm
yep, just head over to http://www.declan-software.com/japanese_ime/ and follow the instructions for installing japanese fonts on your operating system.
March 7th, 2008 at 7:29 pm
I downloaded KeyHoleTV version 3.04, but I don’t see TV Tokyo on it. Shold I download an older version?
March 7th, 2008 at 7:49 pm
It depends on who’s broadcasting. Sometimes the stations are not there, but they do return. It’s random at times.
March 9th, 2008 at 5:37 pm
do you happen to know what the password is for tbs?
March 9th, 2008 at 5:40 pm
The one called TestBS? That’s just someone testing out something, it’s not TBS.
March 9th, 2008 at 5:56 pm
In which station do they give anime the most?
March 9th, 2008 at 7:34 pm
Thanks. And is there any way for me to download that picture (that translates the Japanese channel titles into English) to my computer?
March 9th, 2008 at 10:50 pm
Hi all, sounds great !!
Is there a way to make the player working on Linux (or is there a native linux player) ?
I tried with Wine but it didn’t work :’(
Thanks
March 10th, 2008 at 11:49 am
@Abu: I haven’t heard of a way to make it for with Linux, sorry.
@Oka: just right click on the image, and selet “save as”.
@vicious: easy way to find the anime is watch the stations with the most people. usually they are watching anime or a gameshow.
March 11th, 2008 at 9:55 am

March 14th, 2008 at 11:05 pm
Nick: As near as I an figure it, it is not on the list right now. It is around 11pm my time. I’m hoping it comes up soon for the mma stuff on TBS.
March 15th, 2008 at 1:16 am
Any luck finding the fights Nick?
March 17th, 2008 at 10:11 pm
I know how to save a picture. It’s just that I can’t save this one. When I right-click it only says “Save Background As…”, and not “Save Picture As…”

I downloaded the program but I don’t have Tv Tokyo. How I can have it?
March 23rd, 2008 at 9:46 pm
Hey, thanks a lot, this is great!! Just one question: the guide says: “On this screen you will see the channel name, a preview picture of whats currently playing, and the amount of viewers watching that specific channel. ”
I can see the channel name and the preview pic, but I can’t find the information about the amount of viewers watching the channel?? Has it been disabled somehow or am I just going blind? :9
March 23rd, 2008 at 9:48 pm
Just checked my KeyholeTV client, and it’s still there. That is weird that it’s not showing up for you.
March 25th, 2008 at 1:38 am
Hmm, that is weird. :? Oh well, other than that, it works perfectly so it’s not such a big problem, would’ve just been interesting to see the number of viewers. Thanks anyway!
March 26th, 2008 at 3:46 pm
Any way this thing works for us poor Mac people?
March 28th, 2008 at 3:40 am
hello!! thanks for this!!
I was just wondering if you could add something, if possible. My PC does not support Japanese characters so I have no idea what channel I’m watching (hehe!). It’s all just squares so I can’t even look up what channel it is.
I was hoping you could post like a guide as to what channel is what based on the channel Thumbnails? Just a request, if its ok.
March 28th, 2008 at 10:24 am
Well I cant base a guide off of the channel thumbnails because the thumbnails change depending on what show. It would be impossible to accurately do a guide like that. But if you want Japanese characters to display on your computer right, here’s a guide that will help: http://www.declan-software.com/japanese_ime/
March 28th, 2008 at 12:33 pm
as gaijin asked above:
is there a version for Mac?
March 28th, 2008 at 12:46 pm
No, sorry. The only versions as of right now are Windows and Windows mobile.
March 28th, 2008 at 7:15 pm
not to be blunt, but how do i know there is no spyware or trojans in this program?
if this program comes from the japanese Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs some reference to this fact should be around?
March 28th, 2008 at 8:51 pm
You are welcomed to scan it yourself, however.
1. Goto http://whois.jprs.jp/ (whois for Japanese domain names)
2. A lookup of v2p.jp, shows it belongs to Cognithive Research Laboratories, Inc. Scientific Institute http://www.crl.co.jp/
3. http://www.crl.co.jp/company/government.html They have a few Japanese Government contracts.
March 31st, 2008 at 6:06 pm
Thank you for recommending this programme! :D I’m really excited to watch some proper TV (finally!) However, like one of the earlier commentators, I don’t seem to have TokyoTV on my list either (if the characters are the same as in your screenshot)
In terms of the broadcaster part… is it the person doing the streaming/casting?
March 31st, 2008 at 6:12 pm
Yea, the broadcaster is whoever’s supplying the video to KeyholeTV. Tokyo TV will be back im sure. Channels go out for a little every now-a-then.
April 1st, 2008 at 1:43 am
@xorsyst: Thanks for your reply :) I’ll look forward to Tokyo TV coming back.
On another note, I watched a bit of a channel called “オダイピ (Odaiba?) but I can’t seem to find this channel with Google. Does anyone know where I can find the TV schedule please? Thanks!

What are the system requirements for Keyhole TV? I’m running Windows 2000 and I keep getting “Load Library Error 126″ when I try to launch the program.
April 4th, 2008 at 7:45 pm
On the KeyholeTV official page, they only list XP and Vista as being supported.
April 5th, 2008 at 1:53 pm
I downloaded it but….the channel names don’t come up in kanji. just squares. which one is tv tokyo??
(mine has 18 channels in it. i’m confused)
April 5th, 2008 at 2:02 pm
You are going to want to install Kanji because that’s the only reliable way to tell which channels are what. Channel thumbnails change constantly, so you cant judge what channel you are on without speaking Japanese yourself. http://www.declan-software.com/japanese_ime/ will show you how to install Asian fonts onto your computer.
April 6th, 2008 at 7:29 pm
Hmm… i am so happy and at the same time so dissapointed to find this software :)
I’m happy that i can watch Japanese channels because there is no way of receiving them where i live, i am only dissapointed with the sound quality, and the picture seams to skip lots of frames too.
Anyway thanks so much for this software ! Thank you :)
April 7th, 2008 at 10:19 am
Take a look at TVkoo it works at least 50 times better and the sound and video quality are 10/10 :)
Right now i’m trying to watch a channel with 96 users watching it and theres no picture at all. I guess the p2p thing is not actually working at all …
April 7th, 2008 at 10:25 am
TVkoo also uses P2P streaming technology, just like KeyholeTV. The thing with TVkoo though, its focused around Hong Kong TV, where as KeyholeTV is Japanese. I’m sticking with KeyholeTV.
April 7th, 2008 at 11:32 am
I was no proposing to go and use TVkoo, i was just saying that with TVkoo i am able to watch channels with great quality and great sound.
I have the feeling that KeyHoleTV uses archaic audio/video codecs and the P2P doesn’t work (my upload shows it doesn’t).
I was wondering Why ? Do you have any idea why the quality is so bad ? Or any diea if it will get better ?
April 7th, 2008 at 1:22 pm
Not sure honestly. It definitely isn’t the best quality I have seen, but its watchable. Usually the reason for not using the highest quality bitrates etc is to keep the functionality across the board.
KeyholeTV isn’t as old as TVkoo and a few other streaming services out there. So in time, I believe we will see things get better. When I originally wrote this post on Valentines day, they were on version 3.02 I believe. In the space of less than 2 months, they have already released 4 versions. They are constantly at work on KeyholeTV.
April 7th, 2008 at 5:34 pm
Are you sure it doesn’t has any kind of spyware or something that can somehow ruin your p2p programs??
It’s free + Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs makes me think about some kind of conspiracy :S
April 7th, 2008 at 5:42 pm
Check out my march 28th comment. I go into detail about how the company behind KeyholeTV works with the Japanese government on a number of projects for many years. This page has been viewed over 15,000 times and not one person has complained about spyware.
P2P is an emerging technology that takes the burden and cost off of the designers and lets its users handle the bandwidth needed to make the program works. Enjoy KeyholeTV.
April 7th, 2008 at 6:44 pm
Well i don’t see any upload going on whyle using KeyHoleTV but with TVkoo i upload with 1mb/s and download with 1.5mb/s.
That’s why i think that P2P doesn’t actually work in KeyHoleTV.
Anyway … i hope they not only release new version but also improve with new versions :)
Thanks again for the software.
April 9th, 2008 at 4:59 am
I think it is an allround good program.
KooTV IS better quality, but not AS simple. And as said before specialising on chinese language.
I don’t see why I have to give in a password let alone what it is but hey! Otherwise its quite good.
April 10th, 2008 at 8:56 am
I was so looking forward to using it, but all I get is the program tries to log in and a few seconds later I get the message that the login has timed out. I do use Windows XP. I’m glad others can enjoy the program, but I can’t :-((((

@mae: did a quick scan for NHK this morning, and I didn’t see it on the channel list.
@achikochi: My video plays rather smooth, but the sounds is low quality. I too cant wait for improvements.
@ryszard: I have seen Japanese samurai dramas on Keyhole, you just have to catch them on at the right time. It is TV afterall. Do you know some titles that you are looking for? I can help you find out when they are on.

Same here something happened with tv tokyo. There is only sound pls do something!
May 15th, 2008 at 5:41 pm
I hope TV Tokyo comes back! Of course, I’m not particularly picky about channels right now. I too hope there will be some future improvements in quality. I’m actually listening to “FMCocolo KANSAI Multi language radio” right now and am enjoying it.
Oh! And for people who can’t see the number of viewers in a channel, I’m sure it’s the numbers beside “WATCH”.
Looks like the most people are watching Odaiba (オダイãƒÂ) [125 people] and Akasaka (アカサカ) [61 people]! Hm. *changes channel to check them out*
May 18th, 2008 at 7:26 pm
Hey is there a way to delay the program so its in OUR time???

hello I would like to know if there is any way to see the channels password, if someone has it or where can I get
May 20th, 2008 at 7:50 am
KeyHoleTV is great. I love Absolute Girlriend on Fuji TV. KeyHoleTV helps me in this one. The only problem is that the sound doesn’t synchronise with the movie. May I ask what’s the minimum speed of the internet connection so as to enjoy watching programs. Thank You! I would recommend this to my friends. Ja ne. Kiwotsuketene. =)
May 20th, 2008 at 8:41 am
@nina, @cisa, @valezka: Some people do have passwords set on channels, and there is no way around it without asking them directly. I’m not sure what they are broadcasting, but they definitely dont want people watching it.
@cisa: KeyholeTV is only for Japanese stations. For Chinese channels, you may want to try out TVkoo. Also, there is no spyware on KeyholeTV what so ever. It is run by a company with ties to the Japanese government.
@ikegokid: no there is no way to delay the channels, you just have to wake up at really early times to watch the good stuff.
@maffi: i have a 10mbps cable connection, and I never really notice a sync problem with the audio and video.
May 22nd, 2008 at 5:01 am

@angel: I’m going to update the list of channel names. The channel names are whatever people want to put for the name, so it’s impossible to have the most current ones all the time.
@maffi: Honestly, that should be fast enough. It may have something do with your line quality though. You can have a fast connection, but if the line quality isn’t good, you are not going to have a consistant signal if that makes sense.

Love the program, and it did show me just how bad Japanese tv is. :p When they do it right though, it really does it right. Seems to be based on extremely bad, or extremely awesome.
Anyways, the ONE thing I think that would improve this would be full screen. The quality and stuff can be bad, but I can get around that. I just can’t stand it flickering everytime I move my mouse.

Might want to check out TVUPlayer also. Higher quality video and much higher quality audio. Free, no spyware and no government connection.
Has more Japanese channels although at the time of writing this the main ones are down. Thats how I found this keyholeTV actually, googling for another option until it came back up :) To be honest though i’m not sure how you can watch this with the quality being so poor?
August 5th, 2008 at 11:22 pm
I love this. I downloaded it in order to help me learn the language, and I can say I’m very pleased. Plus I get to watch baseball, which is always awesome. :)
August 10th, 2008 at 10:18 pm

KEYHOLE isn’t so useful, it never works!! It gives many connection problems, and my favourite Radio programs always disappears in the list… Someone should make a better version of this software.

I’m watching CD TV…is it right that the channel called CD TV??? is it one of japanese tv cable channel??
And where i can find the schedule of the channel??
August 18th, 2008 at 12:25 am
Seven months and you’re still replying to new comments, I’m amazed. I’ve actually found KeyholeTV a while ago, but I stumbled here and felt like adding a comment. I usually don’t get too many problems when I want to use it… maybe I’m lucky. Either way, I like the program, I’ve been learning Japanese and been using it more lately. It would be nice if it got popular and stations would broadcast more frequently. Good to see it’s getting spread around though.
August 28th, 2008 at 11:58 am
Thank you so much.
I want to know for NTV channel that i want to see some programe but almost not appear.
August 29th, 2008 at 9:08 am
Someone in your comments gave out bad information - there is a native Linux version of KeyholeTV it even shows how to get it in the screenshots - Click where it says Linux and you have the linux version. I had to install libglitz.so.1 before it worked but I found that quickly in my repositories.
August 30th, 2008 at 12:01 am
Thanks for the application! Can someone tell me which channel shows all the wacky Japanese game shows and the time range for it in Japanese time?

September 5th, 2008 at 7:18 am

September 7th, 2008 at 6:12 am
I’m having the same problem too, can’t login. It worked perfectly yesterday, so I’m wondering if there’s something wrong in the other end (although most problems tend to have sth to do with my dear old computer)…
September 8th, 2008 at 9:19 pm

Good but still no NHK :-(
September 25th, 2008 at 4:18 pm
THANK YOU for this.
Now let’s wait and hope for a somewhat higher bitrate
September 29th, 2008 at 9:49 am
Thanks a lot! The video/audio quality could be better but like you said it is completely watchable. To make the video larger, just double click on the video screen and it will open in a new window, then just expand that video (you have to drag the edges). There you have it, a nice big picture. The quality of the picture is still good, but I noticed it does skip a little more, the larger it is. Also the “x” doesn’t close out the new window, for me anyway. To close the new window just right click at the top to bring up options and just click close from there. Hope this helps.
Oh BTW, I stumbled on your site last week and am really liking it so far, keep it up. ^ ^

Hello. Thanks for telling me about KeyhOLE TV. I have it installed and it works!
I have a request for help though. I want to see UK artist Duffy on Keyhole TV. I have this webpage:
http://www.universal-music.co.jp/u-pop/artist/duffy/news/index.html
But I don’t speak Japanese. :-( I think it says Duffy is on WOWOW TV December 19th - is this TV or radio? Where can I watch WOWOW and is it on Keyhole TV?
Also it says Duffy is on FujiTV 10/05 (I can watch that on keyhole TV I think - it is a lunchtime show@10am?). But please what is NHK? What time is it on and where can I watch/listen on 10/10
Help is much appreciated!

i’m sorry if someone already asked but just wondering. all the channels that have passwords on it are just test channels?
October 10th, 2008 at 9:37 am
Hi! I installed KeyHole months ago and it worked fine… until several weeks ago: since then, it always returns the message “login time out. check your network”. Anyone knows what can we do? Please, help. Thank you in advance! (some friends of mine don’t have this problem, so I thought it maybe the computers… I work on XP)

What happened to TBS channel? It’s not on the list TT_TT
November 2nd, 2008 at 2:29 am
TBS seems to have disappeared. T_T What happened? It was just there yesterday.
November 2nd, 2008 at 11:16 pm
@Yuki: You may want to reinstall it after downloading the latest version. I had that same problem, then a fellow reader pointed out that there was an updated version. After reinstalling, it worked fine.
@lugia, CHP: Since KeyholeTV’s channels are user broadcasted, sometimes certain channels suddenly disappear. They will be back and it’s usually just temporary.

Why is there no sound on mine?
Maybe it’s an issue with my computer? Do I have to do anything special with my audio options?
November 12th, 2008 at 7:18 am
@flamon : i think it has something to do with your connection and location.. i mean if you’re at the other side of the world and far away from japan, it’s more likely to have an out-of-sync sound or no sound at all.. it happens to me too.. and if your connection is as lousy as mine, it may also be a factor..
November 12th, 2008 at 7:40 am
@flamon : i think it has something to do with your connection and location.. if you have a lousy connection as mine, then more likely the data being transmitted is too slow than it should be.. same with location.. can be a factor too..

Would you happen to know if the streamed programs can be “recorded” using VLC? This is typically done if the source’s http or mms address is known.

I have been living in Japan for a year and I would like to watch movies and TV programs in ENGLISH. Every time I try to download something on my Macintosh computer it is not allowed in this region. I wonder if I can watch something (in English) that IS allowed apart from the ancient shows on satellite TV and endless CNN or BBC. Can you help me?
January 4th, 2009 at 4:45 am
why dont u try Hulu or surfthechannel???. i think ur strange for posting that comment on this site btw =)
January 5th, 2009 at 1:37 pm
Marianela,
This is a pretty common issue. She can not “surf to the site” like you suggest Victor because sites like ABC block streams based on IP address. They use geographic IP lookups to determine where you are coming from and block the content if you are not in the USA. The same is true in Japan. If you try to watch a free promotional music video or live Japanese baseball game off of the Yahoo Japan web site and are not physically in Japan, you will get a block message. I would suggest using a US based proxy. There are software packages and services available that provide it. Basically it proxies your request through a US proxy so the traffic appears to be coming from the USA to the providers and is allowed through. Search Google for “watch abc outside us” for some links. Another option is to find a Slingbox service in the USA. In Japan there are a couple of Slingbox service providers. One is “Nihon Nama Terebi”. Another is watchjapanesetv.com. They will rent you a Slingbox in Japan for a monthly fee. You then download the Slingbox client software and can remotely control and watch the TV. The quality pretty good. Usually around 400-600kbps. I subscribed to Nihon Nama Terebi for about 5 months and liked it very much. You might search for similar services in the United States.
Good luck
January 5th, 2009 at 8:50 pm
LOL-u know so much. thanks for that site btw. and here i was thinking that the problem was just a lack of finding good sites. actually surfthechannel is a site too with lots of tv shows and stuff-not surf the web lol-that’s a duh.

KEYHOLE V3.12 PROBLEM ?
I just updated my keyhole from v3.10 to v3.12 and since that update i cant WATCH asahi TV+TBS…..When i select those 2 channels a blur-grey screen pop-ups without sound.
Still i can watch the rest of the japanese channels.
Can someone tell me if it is my PC problem or my keyhole malfuctioning? And what should i do to fix it?
January 18th, 2009 at 1:26 pm
More than likely it is a problem on the broadcaster’s part. The fact that you can see all the other channels fine leads me to think that the broadcaster needs to update his broadcast software.
January 19th, 2009 at 5:42 am
can someone tell me why my keyhole tv has no sound? it was ok a few days ago.. please reply me!! and how do u fix it??
January 19th, 2009 at 9:20 am
Megumi-san,
Are you using the Linux version? I noticed the same thing. Previously I used the 64 bit Alsa/SDL version on Linux with no issues at all. With the 3.12 update, I think it is great that you no longer have to download a separate package for each combo of video/audio drivers but yes, I noticed that I did not have sound. I tried changing the audio options but nothing seemed to work. On Windows Vista, sound is no problem so far with the update.
January 19th, 2009 at 10:04 am
Dear Xorsyst, thank you very much for you great job. I really like japanese TV. Just from last week i found your web and started to watch Japanese TV online. But today i saw announcement under TV. January 22nd, 2009 at 10:26 am
At least the Keyhole TV web site is back up. This is encouraging. Yesterday, along with the streaming video service, it was down. In the “Urgent Messages” section is does mention that they will be relocating their office on the 22nd and that the service and web site will be affected. So if the web site is back up, they must be making progress. Just have to be patient. :-)

January 23rd, 2009 at 1:06 pm
Hello,
A lot of people are commenting lately about the Keyhole servers and web site being down. I wouldn’t worry too much about it people. They announced very early on that they were moving their office on the 22nd and that this would impact the web site and the service. Obviously moving your office from one place to another is not a trivial thing. Unexpected events are likely to occur that must be dealt with (in particular, I would guess that changing ISPs or migrating settings from one place to another with an existing ISP would be very tricky to time and coordinate). Please don’t give up on Keyhole TV just yet! Up until the move, the service was very stable. I’m sure it is just a matter of time before they are back online and stable once again. Incidentally, I woke up this morning at 4:00 AM USA eastern time (Friday, Jan 23rd) and noticed that all stations were online - Asahi, TBS, TV Japan, Fuji, etc. About 12 hours prior to that, a smaller selection of channels was online as was the web site. So it looks like they are making some kind of progress. Keep in mind too that it is the weekend now in Japan so it is possible they will have to wait until Monday to make further progress if they are dependent on service providers that are closed over the weekend.
Note that this is all speculation on my part. I am not associated with Keyhole TV in any way. I am in the IT industry however and have been involved with server migrations and something unexpected always seems to come up! I’m sure it is not any different for the team at Keyhole.
Best Regards,
jdictionary

January 24th, 2009 at 11:43 am
I believe TV Tokyo is available. It shows up as æ±äº¬ï¼‘ï¼’ãƒãƒ£ãƒãƒ«. If you highlight it, it will display “Tokyo 12 Ch”. In my listing it is just above ABC Radio 1008 Osaka. I just watched it and the program playing matches Yahoo Japan TV guide.
January 24th, 2009 at 11:56 am
Thank you very much. I think you are right.

January 24th, 2009 at 3:32 pm
the link to download KHTV doesnt work…..
January 25th, 2009 at 2:26 pm
The KHTV download link provided by JDICTIONARY works from IE but not from Firefox. Tried it several times via Firefox and the download flashed by so quick but no file was actually downloaded. I tried IE and the file was downloaded successfully. I installed it and got a working KHTV again. Not all channels are up yet and though some channels appear on the list you just hear feedback when you click on them (could also be that they’re off-air).
January 25th, 2009 at 2:58 pm
Thanks for letting me know ANONYM. I personally use Firefox and haven’t had a problem but I’m logged into Dropbox where I uploaded the file, so perhaps that is why. I apologize if anybody is having troubles with the link. Also, want to let you all know that the file I provided is the same exact file I downloaded from KeyHole TV a few days before their web site went down. I posted it because a lot of people were asking for somebody to upload it and nobody had responded.
You are right about stations being off the air. A good way to check is to go to the Yahoo Japan television guide. Of course this site is in Japanese but it allows you to see what is currently playing among the various channels. I recommend setting the city to Tokyo “æ±äº¬”. Here is a link:
http://tv.yahoo.co.jp/listings/realtime/
If you see “ç•ªçµ„æƒ…å ±ãŒã‚りã¾ã›ã‚“”, it means the station is off the air.
There is a really nice plug-in for Firefox called “Foxclocks”. It allows you to put the current time in Japan (or anywhere else in the world) into the status bar of Firefox. I personally use Foxclocks in combination with the Yahoo TV guide to keep track of what is currently on the air.
January 25th, 2009 at 3:17 pm
I was wrong about the download not working thru Firefox. I was looking for it in the wrong folder. I was just now browsing through my folders and found 3 copies of KHTV 3.12. Sorry about the false alarm…
January 25th, 2009 at 3:18 pm
is anyone still finding it down, i have version 3.09 and it keeps saying login timed out. check your network….
January 25th, 2009 at 3:23 pm
Lucy, I grabbed a copy of 3.12, the latest, just before KeyHole’s site went down. I have made it available to people here at this forum. Here is a link (this is the Windows version):
http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/528943/SetupKHTV3.12.exe
January 25th, 2009 at 10:51 pm
So odd: the KHTV website’s been down for quite a while now so I couldn’t upgrade, but worst of all, KHTV had stopped connecting altogether .. I’ve got 3.09 (Linux), and it was working perfectly until recently :( now its all “Login timed out. Check your Network”.. Does the 3.12 version work without problems atm, or is it the same story??
January 25th, 2009 at 11:31 pm
Hi Marmedo,
The Windows 3.12 version works well. I downloaded the latest Linux version before their site went down along with Windows. Here is a link. This is the 64 bit version.
http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/528943/LKeyHoleTV1.21-64bits.tar.gz
Unfortunately I did not get the 32 bit one along with 64. I’m running Fedora 10 with Gnome and the video is excellent but unfortunately I have not been able to get sound. Previously, as you know, they had different versions depending on your setup - ALSA, SDL, ESD, etc. This time it is all in one package and you can specify your setup on a new “Audio/Video” tab. I tried all combinations but couldn’t get sound. :-( If you are running 64 bit and get it to work I’d be interested to hear about it! Hopefully their web site will be back up soon.

I have Keyhole 3.08 version, but it doesn’t work anymore.
The message is: login timed out, check your network.
Do I have to download the New Version?
January 26th, 2009 at 10:33 am
Yes, you need 3.12. Please read the past few comments for alternate links (as the official KeyHole site is down) to updated versions if you are using Windows or Linux.
January 26th, 2009 at 10:39 am
Thank you very much for the reply. Yes, I read the past Comments but I didn’t understand well. Now I understood, thank you. I will download the New Version hoping to listen again to RADIO NIPPON 1422 (^_^)

One question. Tokyo 12 Ch is the same channel as TV Tokyo ?
January 27th, 2009 at 11:14 pm
Thanks for the reply Jdictionary! (Sorry for my late reply, I’ve had PC trouble for a few days.)
Thanks for the link!! I’m running Ubuntu Intrepid (intel x86 version), but I downloaded the 64bit link anyways :D I also just checked the website (it was working, finally!) and downloaded the 32 bit as well.. On testing them both, ‘lkeyholetv’ near ate up all of my CPU even before the setup section could even show; so I had to “Force-quit” them..
I downloaded the ubuntu 8.04 version, which didn’t take as much CPU but still managed to chronically slow down the PC to a snails-pace (conky showed CPU to be 90% in use!), and got the sound working only by selecting the UNIX option. Selecting ALSA and other options resulted in the “login timed out” message; which is really strange because I’ve set-up ALSA for my sound-card on the system!
Even with the sound sorted, the major CPU usage resulted in the video being several seconds out of sync with the sound, plus all other apps I had open completely frozen; so, once AGAIN, I had to force-quit it. *sigh*
Come to think of it, I never had these problem with the previous 1.10(?) version. Have you contacted Kosaka-san about the sound problem? I’m thinking of doing so myself; it seems there are alot of bugs with the new linux 1.12 releases :’(
As a last resort, I went ahead and downloaded Win 3.12 and installed it on XP in Virtualbox, and lo and behold: it worked just fine! \(^o^)/ (It didn’t work through Wine though). Using the Win version seems to be the only way in which I could actually access KHTV without having to tear my hair out! lol

hmm i updated to 3.12 and somehow it still gets login timeouts all the time..?? it worked fine before… (T T)

January 29th, 2009 at 10:31 am
Can someone help with this problem? Is there any way to solve it?
January 29th, 2009 at 12:20 pm
Tommx, I just tried with both Windows and Linux and I was able to login and stream TV with both. On Windows, a security alert may pop-up asking if you want to “block or unblock” the KeyHole TV service. I suspect you will need to make sure and “unblock” that one.
Marmedo, thanks for the reply! I just tried the 32 bit Linux client at work and it worked pretty nicely. I am running Fedora 10 on this PC as well and the OS is 32 bit (home one is 64 bit). The first time I ran it, it said something like “Could not use audio device”. I had the audio set to ALSA. I have seen similar errors with other applications like mplayer. What I did was open up a shell and type “pulseaudio -kill” and then “pulseaudio -D”. After doing this, the audio came to life. In the AUDIO/VIDEO tab, I have audio set to ALSA and video set to “Video Display uses GTK Viewer”. I’ll try doing the same at home and see if it fixes the audio problem. Sorry to hear about your CPU issues but I’m glad you found a workaround!
January 29th, 2009 at 2:02 pm
Its unblocked and I cant log in,i dont get it… Ive tried to reinstall it and i have checked my internet connection and the windows firewall security and everything is just fine… I dont get it..:(

i was wondering if anyone knows if it is possible to get the passwords to some of the channels on keyhole tv. love watching japanese tv, really helps with learning japanese. please keep this program up. (^-^)
February 5th, 2009 at 4:05 am
Can someone help me with this? I have contacted one of the keyhole employee and he send me this to mail:
“Thank you very much to use KeyHoleTV.
Please start the command prompt. And then execute
nslookup.
type v2p.keyholetv.jp (enter)
If nslookup returns,
Name: v2p.keyholetv.jp
Address: 113.32.187.18
your DNS is correct. However, if nslookup returns
different address, your DNS is the something wrong.
In this case, you have to edit the registory,
execute regedit by start menu -> run.
In the regedit, you can find
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\KeyHoleTV,
and you can find HostAddr.
The value of the HostAddr is v2p.keyholetv.jp, and you can change 113.32.187.18 instead of v2p.keyholetv.jp.”
I dont know what to do,i can¨t find some of these folders so if someone could help thnx…
February 5th, 2009 at 5:25 am
Hi Tommx,
I’m glad you are at least getting something to try. The folders are paths in your registry. To get to the registry, you need to run “regedit” either from a command prompt or by clicking Start->Run, then type “regedit” into the text box and click OK. Once you do that, you will see what appear to be folders and his email will make more sense. They are not folders on your hard drive if that is where you were looking.
Before you try that though, did you do the first part of his email? I’m just curious if you are getting back 113.32.187.18 when you do an nslookup on v2p.keyholetv.com. You can also try “ping v2p.keyholetv.com” for the same check. You should get back a resolution of that name into an IP. For example, if you click Start->Run, type “cmd” and hit “OK”, then type:
ping v2p.keyholetv.com
you should get back something like this:
C:\Windows\system32>ping v2p.keyholetv.jp
Pinging v2p.keyholetv.jp [113.32.187.18] with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 113.32.187.18: bytes=32 time=211ms TTL=42
The important part is the numbers after “Reply from”. If it is already 113.32.187.18 then you don’t need to do the registry editing.
Assuming you don’t get back 113.32.187.18, an alternative to editing the registry (it is usually not advisable to edit your registry because you can mess up your entire system if you make a mistake) is to override your local system’s DNS lookup for that domain name. The way to do this is to add an entry to your hosts file which is located here: (usually, but not always depending on version of Windows you are running):
C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts
You can open that file in notepad and add this as the last line:
113.32.187.18 v2p.keyholetv.jp
to accomplish the same thing that the registry edit is doing. It is probably safer and perhaps easier.
If you are still stuck, answer these questions and I will try to help tomorrow. I’m going to bed now.
1) Which version of Windows are you using?
2) What is the IP address result of the ping/nslookup test?
3) Do you have the file C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts on your computer
Good luck, hope you can get it worked out.

February 13th, 2009 at 2:30 pm
I absolutely have the same problem. I wrote an e-mail as well but they didn’t reply yet. I tried the registry change and the “hosts” file. When I try the nslookup I get Name:113×32x187×18.ap113.ftth.ucom.ne.jp
Address: 113.32.187.18 back.
If I ping their IP the request will be timed out.
If I ping v2p.keyholetv.jp it is successful.
If I use tracert no matter if ip or v2p.keyholetv.jp I get a huge 9times Resquest timed out after passing? 221×112x24×30.ap221.ftth.ucom.ne.jp
It worked before pretty well but since their strange change it doesn’t anymore. I have three computers (vista ultimate, xp prof, xp home). Hopefully this can be fixed I’m really sad and desperate.

March 5th, 2009 at 1:48 pm
This question of passwords seems to come up frequently. The password protected channels are private user-created channels that the owner has chosen not to share. There is no “password list” floating around somewhere. The KeyholeTV app is a peer-to-peer video client at its root that anybody can use to setup a video channel. It *just happens to have* all the public TV channels available for free. If you are curious about the password feature and how it works, check out the “INFORMATION” section of the official Keyhole TV web site.

Man this is seriously the best thing on the web. Words cannot describe how happy I am to watch Waratte ii tomo, SMAPxSMAP, Best House 123, Mecha Ike, Gaki no Tsukai, Ainori……. the list goes on. Seriously, I love the people who make this possible.
That said, I was wondering if anyone knew of anyway to increase performance. I try to minimize other bandwidth usage the best I can, but I have 2 other roommates so… yea. My biggest issue is the video freezing every so often. Anyone have any ideas? Just curious ^^

Network is down. I actually wanted to watch the news due to the FedEx plane crash at Narita Int. Airport. I also read the Japanese site and it will be down due to server maintenance and change of equipment(?). It also states the time frame could vary and it can possibly carry over to the 24th.

I loved KeyHole TV. I got it yesterday and it was great (I have Linux Ubuntu 8.10). The sound stopped working, it was easy to fix, I just changed the audio. But, after that.. when the sound went out and was fuzzy, it was painful and so loud to listen to. It’s impossible to tolerate! I’m not sure why this has happened or how to fix it, but I think I may get rid of it for this reason. Otherwise, I’d really recommend it ’cause it was great for those few hours it was working well for me =)

Very nice tool but I think that it will not be very competitive on the market and people will not use this program because nowadays, on the internet are many television websites or directories like http://www.soltrago.com or other, which allow to watch TV from all over the world , including Japan for free and with no registration. The main advantage of this kind of websites is that people do not to install or to download anything to his computer in order to watch Japanese TV channels.

July 1st, 2009 at 4:34 pm
how do you get the passwords
July 1st, 2009 at 11:37 pm
@all who ask about passwords
the passwords are to get access to shows that individual people run. As I understand it, it is not actually Japanese TV, but stuff that users can run via Keyhole Video. You could sometimes find Japanese TV on it, but it is not what is actaully being broadcasted on live television at the moment you are watching it.
So, I would guess you would have to contact the individual who is running that channel to get the password. There is no ‘end all be all’ solution to this.

It has been mentioned on all of the Japanese networks that there is going to be a switch from analog to digital starting July 26, 2011. How will this affect KeyholeTV? On the top right hand corner it says “アナãƒã‚°”, which means analog, so will the site be shut down after that or will make the transition t digital?

and also I have problems with access to server T_T
December 6th, 2009 at 4:58 pm
I guess there are still some problems: not only NHK disappeared but also Fuji TV, let alone that some channels don’t work yet.
Video and audio quality is low with KeyHole TV, but the program is usually less problematic than others (like TvAnts)… well, not right now, of course.

January 18th, 2010 at 9:23 pm
To anyone who cannot get it to log in, there are two steps that helped me.
1.) Forwarded UDP port 3000 on my router.
2.) Went to http://www.v2p.jp/video/Viewer/Windows and downloaded/installed SetupKHTV3.13.exe first, and only THEN installed FixKHTV3.14.exe.
Actually, the second step (installing “Setup” before “Fix”) is what made it work, so I don’t even know if my port forwarding affected it at all.

January 21st, 2010 at 4:35 pm
sunny, thanks a lot.
I was wondering why the hell it wasn’t working but you are right, step 2 is what makes it work. There’s no raelly need to port forward.
Everyone should first install the keyhole via setupfile and then use the fix file.
Again thanks a lot, sunny….not a lot info about that shit anyway so I really appreciate it^^

April 6th, 2010 at 10:08 am
It’s going to be back soon, NatsukoSam.
Some channels disappear for a while then come back later on.
If you aren’t getting sound make sure you close down anything else using sound on your computer like firefox or any movies you have playing, etc. That fixes it for me.
