As a beer lover who lived in Japan, I can attest that Ebisu (Y is silent) is great. There were 4 varieties I can recall: the gold can is the "standard", green is hoppier, red is a more amber-lagerish beer (think Yuengling in the States), and black is a stout.

However, someone who prefers very light beers or isn't a self-described beer-lover may find most Yebisu products to be too strong. Of course, I still recommend trying it.
A hint for distribution purposes, it is brewed by Sapporo, so chances are, you'll find them near each other!

Another delicious Japanese beer is Kirin Gold - it seemed like a wheat ale, although a bit lighter than usual.

Good luck in your search & kanpai!
