News from Japan

News from JapanHey, time for another edition of the Weekend News. I think I settled on Sunday for doing this as it’s usually a slow day for news anyways, and I can sit down with my tea for a while and sift through all the items I saved during the week. This week was a busy one, so without further adieu, I give you the news.

Japanese coaches want swimsuit as good as Speedo’s

A Japanese Olympic coach is urging Speedo’s rivals to make a swimsuit as advanced as Speedo’s LZR Racer. The Japanese Olympic swimmers are required by the national federation to wear swimsuits and other products by one of three Japanese Makers, Mizuno, Asics, and Descente. Who would have thought that a piece of fabric would give someone that much of an edge? I guess when you’re talking about national pride, it matters. Via FG.

Recycled Chopsticks produce beautiful arrangements

A leading school in Ikebana is using chopsticks to create large flower arrangements as part of their schools “Mottainai” recycling project. The chopsticks were collected in individual recycling boxes scattered around Tokyo Midtown shopping mall. After the works are finished being displayed, they will be recycled yet again and turned into fertilizer.

Pretty boys showing fetish for the full facial

Gatsby, a men’s cosmetics maker, has recently come out with a product called Extra perfect Masks targeted at males aged 17-21. It’s the first time a facial pack has been marketed in Japan for males, and guys can’t get enough of them. The article goes on to say that many of these men’s mothers came of age in the 80s, where beautiful and feminine looking males were very popular with women. It seems like their mothers’ sense of taste has been passed on to the sons.

Elderly man jailed for stealing 1,400 books

Tomio Okawa, 73, has been arrested for stealing more than 1,400 books and magazines from a Fujisawa public library. This guy is 73 years old and has stolen that many items… He either is good at stealing and took his time to amass such an extensive collection, or the library attendants are blind. He said he loved books and was afraid that he couldn’t visit the library. So he kept the items at his house.

A love hotel with no sex?

Would you think a movie set in a love hotel, without a single sex scene, and a 59-year-old woman as the heroine would be popular? If you answered no, you would be wrong. Director Izuru Kamasake has taken these seemingly unconnected elements and has incorporated them into a movie called Park and Love Hotel. This movie has just received the Best First Feature Award at this year’s Berlin Film festival.

Japanese man tapped the wrong woman’s bottom

This is a perfect example as to why you should keep your hands to yourself. A 65-year-old man from Tokyo is in more trouble than he thought he was. He claimed that a young lady was blocking everyone else from getting their luggage at a Manila airport. So he tapped her on the bottom. Well turns out that 26-year-old young lady was the daughter of Cebu’s governor, and herself a lawyer! The man has been detained and is being held under suspicion of violating immigration laws through “undesirable” behavior.

Suicide wave across Japan

You probably have seen the spate of suicides across Japan due to Hydrogen sulfides. Many of these people not only killed themselves but also put the lives of many people at risk due to the gas spreading. Inhaling hydrogen sulfide will almost instantly cause death. It smells like rotten eggs, but at high concentrations, can become odorless. The Kyoto Prefectural police have begun asking Internet providers to start deleting Web pages that offer information on how to create Hydrogen Sulfide. But should it be the Internet provider’s responsibility?

A burglar broke into police dormitory

Talk about just plain stupid. Ryuji Uchida, 23, has been arrested for attempted trespassing and willful destruction of property for breaking into a Gyoda police dormitory. He admits he climbed over a wall and broke a window with a tire wrench. After he got into, 3 police officers who had heard the noise were there waiting for him.

Pee in a cup and I can tell where you are from

Researchers at Imperial College in London have discovered that people from different nations have very different urine. Even though the Chinese and Japanese are almost identical genetically, metabolically, they are very different. A lot of factors including diet play a role here. By looking at urine, researchers can example a person’s diet, and what diseases they are culturally prone to. Via FG

A 27-year-old woman has been arrested for dumping 15 kilos of vomit near her apartment in Kobe around 4:30 am. The woman, a pharmacist, confessed she was bulimic and had recently been binge eating. Via FG.

The bullet train stripper arrested

Ryosuke Okada, 42, president of the Osaka-based Firstserver Inc has been arrested for stripping naked in front a female crewmember on a bullet train in Hamamatsu. At around 4:50 pm, Okada stripped naked in front of a woman who was selling food and drinks on the Kodama No. 567. I wonder if Okada was drunk…
