This was bound to happen someday, too bad Nintendo had nothing to do with it. Seems a group of Wii coders have made an application that allows the Wii to have DVD playback.
The technique installs a tiny, hidden channel on the Wii that features a DVD access library. Then using the MPlayer application, you can watch DVDs on both modded and unmodded Wii consoles.
I do see Nintendo’s point on why they keep pushing back the DVD playing aspect. However, I believe offering a feature and it not being used much outweighs not offering it at all. Those that need their Wii to play DVDs for whatever reason will be happy. Those that don’t need their Wii to play DVDs wont care.

I haven’t touched my wii in ages (pun intended). So I might look at giving this a try to breathe a bit of life back into it.
What is the reason that they don’t want DVD on the game? Is it to try and not compete with Sony, by offering less? I agree with you that it makes more sense to have it verses not.
